2-7 Triple Draw

The 2-7 Triple Draw poker game is a fast paced style of poker. This different style of poker has been gaining popularity amongst players at online poker rooms, but it is still a relatively new type of poker game. Seeing as how Triple Draw is new to the poker game list, the information regarding its rules, as well as tips and strategies is limited. Do not worry though, poker pro Daniel Negreanu wrote about 2-7 Triple Draw in his book, Super Systems 2. The game is a draw card type of game, which means that it is closely related to the original poker where players would get their hand dealt and they would trade or exchange cards for new ones from the deck.

2-7 Triple Draw Poker History

As mentioned before, there is not much information on 2-7 Triple Draw and that includes its history. Triple Draw itself has been a subject of many debates. Many speculate that this game style emerged in the 1990's and was only included in the ultra-high stakes mixed games, which is why most have little recollection of it. It was in 2002 when Triple Draw made its debut in the online poker scene. The actual 2-7 Triple Draw variant was first seen in the 2004 WSOP and returned again in 2007 where it has remained since. The game isn't as popular as other poker games, but it is still too early to tell whether or not it will make a big impression.

How to Play 2-7 Triple Draw

The 2-7 Triple Draw is a fast paced game, where the opponents objective is to get the lowest hand possible; making this game a type of Lowball variation. As it is a draw card type of game, the dealer hands out 5 cards to each player before the match begins. This will be the first round of betting, followed by the first round of card drawing. Card drawing basically means each player will take turns selecting, if any, which cards they want to exchange for ones on the deck.

There will be two more betting rounds, where each is followed by a card drawing round. Once this has all happened, the final round of betting will commence. If there is more than one player left at the end of the final round of betting, there will be what is called a showdown. During this final step, players will show their cards to each other to determine who has the best hand. The best hand in 2-7 Triple Draw is the player with the lowest hand. Players draw cards 3 times during the match, which is why it is called triple draw.

2-7 Triple Draw Rules

The rules for 2-7 Triple Draw are very simple to follow and easy to understand. For those unfamiliar with lowball games, they are games where players with the lowest hand will win. Unlike other lowball games where the Ace is considered to be the lowest card of the deck, in 2-7 Triple Draw, it is the opposite; the Ace is in fact the highest card. Also, straights and flushes actually count against the player.

Hand rankings are exactly like the rankings used for poker, like Texas Hold'em; however, the order is reversed since the lowest hand wins. The lowest possible combination is 2-3-4-5-7, which is why they refer to the game as 2-7 Triple Draw.

When there are two or more players left after the final round of betting, there will be a showdown and everyone must show their cards. To determine the winner, the players will start comparing the cards. They will start with the highest, or worst, card in their hand. If a player's highest card is lower than the others, then that player wins. If they are the same, then they move on to the next highest card and so on until a winner is found. Should two players have the same card sequence and rank, then the pot will be split.

2-7 Triple Draw is a very simple poker game, where it mixes in speed and strategy. Players looking for something new and challenging should definitely play this.
