There are some quite significant changes to the WSOP schedule for 2014 and onwards with the WSOP APAC event now taking place in even years and the WSOP Europe in odd years. This therefore means no WSOP Europe in 2014 and the APAC event will take place between October 1st and 17th. WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart states that, “The WSOP standard is bigger, better and different. Moving to a rotational approach, with one international event per year allows for better organization and more marketing in each region. We also want to do right by the players, and provide more value for their travel dollar. There is a glut of poker tournaments around the world, and our vision is to each year put on a single global showcase that can’t be missed.”
The APAC event will again take place at the Crown Plaza in Melbourne and will feature 10 bracelet events, with the full schedule to be released in the new year. This means that the Crown will again see two huge events in 2014 with the Aussie Millions Main Event taking place at the end of January 2014. To many this is a sensible move and will indeed be an easier focus in terms of marketing. With 3 huge events each year, maybe the WSOP was being a little stretched and by having tournaments in the north and southern hemisphere on a bi-annual basis organising satellites and qualifiers to the larger events will be a whole lot easier.
